Happy group of fishermen

We had this enthusiastic group from the U.S.A catch lovely Longfin Tuna in the 25Kg to 30Kg class. This year, the Tuna run has extended well into the middle of July, which is the longest season in recent memory.

Another fine Yellowfin tuna!

Jason Alliers took advantage of the recent appearance of the tuna to catch this 40 kg yellowfin tuna. The tuna have officially arrived, with plenty of longfin and yellowfin tuna being caught fairly close to Cape Point. Yellowtail are also being caught under rafts of kelp out in the tuna grounds.

Snoek on the bite!

This mom and son  caught several large snoek off Cape Point recently. All the way from Ireland, this was their first (and successful ) attempt at game fishing in The Cape waters. No guesses what they are having for dinner tonight!

Catching crayfish!

This couple enjoyed the last day of the crayfishing season to catch some fine ones for the pot. The conditions were ideal with flat seas and very little wind. The crayfish were also on the bite!

Don and friends

This group of friends enjoyed a successful days fishing and returned with a mixed bag of yellowfin tuna, longfin tuna, skipjack and yellowtail for the day. The tuna, although very late this year, finally made an appearance and with favourable weather predicted for the near future, good catches are expected!

During a pelagic bird watching trip, a group of birding enthusiasts were lucky to spot these fine species of birds about 20 miles South West of Cape Point. Visibility and sea conditions were favourable for good sightings! The key to seeing large volumes of pelagic birds is to find a fishing vessel that is processing its catch at sea. The pelagic birds have learned that this is a source of food and regularly follow the fishing vessels.

During the return trip to Simonstown, Phillipa and her son Adam were pictured here viewing one of the many interesting caves see along the coastline at the Cape Point nature reserve. Cape clawless otters and Cape fur seals are seen regularly along this coastline! In season, plenty of crayfish are also caught here!

Tuna in feeding frenzy

(photo: Barrie Rose)

Just before the strong South Easterly winds started blowing, these yellowfin tuna were spotted feeding  on some bait fish near the canyon (approx 30 miles South West of Cape Point). This is encouraging, as the tuna season this year has started off rather slowly, but all indications point to an improvement soon! During the summer months, yellowfin and longfin tuna are caught  in good numbers near the canyon. They  are found here as a result of the upwelling that takes place which in turn produces food for the tuna.
